Are you magnesium deficient?

Some key signs to magnesium deficiency can include;

  • Muscle cramps
  • Stress, nervousness and/or anxiety
  • Muscle tension
  • Tension headaches and migraines
  • Loss of appetite
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Fatigue or low energy

Do any of these sound like you? On a regular basis? Perhaps you’re missing magnesium.

What is so important about magnesium?

Magnesium is an essential nutrient and is required for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It has a role in healthy nerve and muscle function, assisting your cells to make energy and keep the heart rhythm steady. Magnesium is also used for maintaining healthy blood sugar levels, promoting normal blood pressure, breaking down protein, carbs and fat to make energy, enhancing muscle relaxation and relieving muscle cramps and spasms.

Where can you find magnesium?

It is found in a wide range of foods, in particular green vegetables, grains, nuts, legumes and chocolate. Although it is available in these foods, it is often difficult to get the adequate amount of magnesium from your diet alone. The CSIRO study of Australian adults found that the daily intake of magnesium was below the recommended daily intake for 50% of males and 39% of females. Our modern lifestyle also increase the daily requirements for magnesium significantly, for example, stress can deplete magnesium levels and can high consumptions of tea, coffee and alcohol.

What is the best form of magnesium?

Magnesium found in sports drinks can lead to a break-up of the nutrient in your digestive system which can sometimes cause diarrhoea. Magnesium bisglycinate is a form of magnesium that does not break up and is highly absorbable to be better utilised by the cells in your body.

At Essential Health Centre, we stock magnesium products from Metagenics, which utilises the highest quality ingredients and raw materials so our clients get the best results and help them with their health journey.
