Stress is becoming a more common reality in modern living. We are working longer hours, sleeping less and our senses are constantly being overloaded from media sources with the latest tragedy, and it’s easy to see why many people experience some form of anxiety at one point or another in their lives.
To know how to manage stress, it is important to understand how the body reacts to stress. There are 3 basic ways in which we perceive stress – chemical, physical and emotional. Environmental stress? Things like pollution or hearing an explosion down a quiet street. Stress through the body includes things such as poor nutrition, lack of sleep or illness. Emotional stress however is how we interpret certain things. We have the control over how much of emotional stress we experience, much more so than environmental or body stressors.
When our bodies undergo stress, the body’s fight or flight response is triggered. Your sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is stimulated, which means your heart beats faster and your senses become more alert. The danger currently, is that we can become overstressed- with consequences such as high blood pressure, increased risk of heart disease, damage to muscle tissue and more. Constant stress can leave us feeling worse for wear.
The spinal joints and surrounding musculature tend to be greatly affected by stress. There are often some minor joint problems in the spine, which do not bother you until a moment of a great or continuous stress. This results in huge amounts of pain surrounding the spine either in the shoulders, mid back or lower back and also may result in strong headaches.
Chiropractic focuses on the spine and joints, which are the root of the nervous system. One of the impacts of chronic stress is muscle tension and contraction, which can lead to uneven pressure on the skeleton causing joint dysfunctions. Chiropractic can help achieve a balanced spine- a crucial element in easing personal stress. Essential Health Centre practitioners utilise a multimodal approach to assisting their clients on their health journey. Nutrition also greatly impacts on our stress management, why here at Essential Health Centre we offer a wide range of supplements to help manage stress and anxiety- speak to one of our chiropractors for a recommendation.
